Our Forefathers Understood

George Washington, 1789

"The propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained."

-George Washington, First Inaugural Address, 1789

Our founding fathers established this nation with the help of a biblical viewpoint. Their faith was central to their lives. That is why the Declaration of Independence opens with the obvious truth that God created all people with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Over the last half century, we have taken these rights for granted. This has led to a gradual loss of freedoms. Not long ago:

  • Americans could pray whenever and however they chose.
  • American schools taught science that agreed with the Bible.
  • Each human life was considered a gift - born or unborn.
  • Americans honored marriage as the sacred union between one man and one woman.
  • Americans could display their faith whenever and however they wanted to.

"My views...are the result of a life of inquiry and reflection, and very different from the anti-Christian system imputed to me by those who know nothing of my opinions. To the corruptions of Christianity I am, indeed, opposed; but not to the genuine precepts of Jesus himself. I am a Christian in the only sense in which He wished any one to be; sincerely attached to his doctrines in preference to all others..."

Thomas Jefferson

-Thomas Jefferson, Letter written to Dr. Benjamin Rush (also a signer of the Declaration of Independence)
